They mostly talked sitting in the front seat of Frosty's van, but sometimes the essays would require them to head to the beach ( ). Despite agreeing to teach Jay how to surf, like in the movie, Frosty did not train just anyone for Mavericks. The real Frosty Hesson had worked with dozens and dozens of young people, teaching them both about becoming great surfers and great people too. Patrick Swayze’s board sold for $64,000 when his estate was being auctioned off in 2017 after his death (RIP).Frosty and Jay (top) were close friends just like actors Gerard Butler and Jonny Weston portray in the movie (bottom). The list of filming locations for TNS carries few surprises, as most of it was shot on the mainland U.S. Stunt doubles were used for some of the larger waves, such as at “Bells Beach,” but more on that later.
